“You Have to Have the Desire,” Says U.S. Career Institute Medical Billing Grad
Fort Collins, Colorado – March 4, 2009 – Successful, self-employed medical billing specialist and U.S. Career Institute graduate Kimberly Crump is featured in the recently published 2009 DETC Outstanding Graduates and Famous Alumni booklet. The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) is a nationally recognized accrediting agency for distance education institutions.
U.S. Career Institute (USCI) promoted Kimberly for inclusion in this year’s line-up of DETC outstanding graduates for these reasons: She had a top course GPA (97%), she showed a persistent, ‘can do’ attitude while getting her business off the ground and, although she’s now a busy professional, she takes time to share her expertise with USCI medical billing graduates who call to speak with her about her business.
In 2005, Kimberly’s decision to take USCI’s medical billing course brightened the economic outlook for herself and her infant son. With her 12-year marriage ending, she began researching professions that would allow her to work from home. After deciding on medical billing, she devoted the summer to completing USCI’s course, scoring high in each lesson. In September, she launched her company, Precise Medical Billing. “I got online and found every single [healthcare office] address,” she said, looking for a client within a 60-mile radius of her home in Barling, Arkansas. She began visiting offices, leaving her marketing materials for review, and she always had her briefcase handy to be ready for an on-the-spot interview. To keep her baby close by, she brought him and his babysitter along in the car. After five months of diligent marketing, she got her first “yes.” She began billing for a practice with two speech therapists (now expanded to three). Regarding her persistence, she says, “You have to have the desire. I knew I was the only one who was going to make this work for me. I was the only one who could do it.” Last September, she landed six additional speech therapy clients from another practice. She hopes to expand Precise Medical Billing again when her son enters kindergarten.
Even with her busy professional schedule, Kimberly finds time to help others by serving as a graduate referral for USCI. She takes calls from USCI medical billing graduates and potential course enrollees who ask about her experience in starting her business. Taking graduate referral calls “blends absolutely” with her practice, she says. “It keeps up my heartfelt desire to make it go.” Kimberly also assists her local community by attending events that support business growth in the Barling area. Acknowledging these efforts, the local Chamber of Commerce has presented her with a small-business award.
Kimberly views her decision to take the USCI medical billing course as one of the best of her life. “I wouldn’t have achieved my personal goals if it were not for [the USCI] team,” she says. The flexibility of studying at home, on her own schedule, helped her succeed.
U.S. Career Institute is operated by Weston Distance Learning, Inc. (Fort Collins, Colorado), which also operates two other distance-education schools: At-Home Professions and McKinley College. All three schools enroll students throughout the country. Each serves its own distinct distance-ed. constituency. Almost 30 fields of training are offered by Weston schools.
